Try Not to Drool at 'Abstraction After Warhol' Exhibit

The Painting Factory has put together an immense show at The MOCA on Grand titled, 'Abstraction After Warhol'. The show beautifully displays the transformation and revitalization of the abstract in today's world with a collection of breath taking works.

Known as mostly reductive in the past, abstractionism has become all- embracing, with the addition of pop culture and technology to it's vocabulary. Warhol's Rorschachs, Shadows and Camouflage paintings anchor the show since his studio work took pure abstraction into a new direction. With the introduction of pop culture and unconventional technique of mechanical reproduction, he both undermined and expanded the accepted approaches to painting.

The exhibition runs from April 29 to August 20 and showcases impressive works by Rudolf Stingel, Urs Fischer, Mark Bradford, Christopher Wool, Sterling Ruby, Tauba Auerbach, and Julie Mehretu to name a few.

Carpets have been installed throughout the exhibit and make a gorgeous addition to the show. The collection feels like a private viewing this way, and the act of leaving footprints as you go speaks to the evolution of abstractionism itself. Just as each artist follows in the footsteps of those who influenced him before, we too leave our footprints as we stroll along these stunning works.

Here are a few pictures I took from my iPhone at the glamorous opening night.

Justine Freeman learned to appreciate art from the time she was a girl running around her grandmother's famed art collection. She believes that art does not have to be beautiful if it evokes feelings or new ideas. The beauty is that one single work can distort the way you see the world. Betty Freeman, who the art community still respects and talks about today for her fantastic estate collection, put herself in charge of Justine's culture. For this, Justine has remained forever grateful. She wants nothing more than to pass on this exuberant love and appreciation to her readers.
